Publicly humiliated, stripped of his titles and evicted from his home, Andrew Mountbatten Windsor might have wondered whether things could possibly get any worse. Well, they just have. The emails and photos released as part of the latest batch of Epstein files paint another seedy picture of a man seduced by the money and lifestyle of a convicted paedophile.
You have to ask whether any brain cells whirred into life when the then Prince invited Epstein, newly freed from prison, to dinner at Buckingham Palace. What on earth was he thinking? Did no red warning lights flash when Epstein offered “the Duke” a beautiful 26-year-old Russian girl as a “dinner” date? Surely the thought must have occurred to him that this could, at the very least, present a security risk?
And why would he, if it really was him, allow himself to be pictured on all fours touching a young woman lying motionless beneath him on the floor?
The Palace’s fears that the Epstein scandal was not yet over have been proved accurate. The King is vindicated in his brutal decision to remove every title and honour from his brother and banish him from Windsor. The latest emails have provided further evidence that Andrew — and his ex wife, Sarah — openly lied about ending their friendship with Epstein after his conviction. To the contrary, it seems that neither of them could keep away from the man — or his money.
Andrew has consistently denied any wrongdoing. If that really is the case then he has to answer why he has refused to cooperate with the US authorities investigating Epstein’s web of abuse. We now have details of the formal request put to him six years ago— and yet this man who protested in his Newsnight interview that he suffered from “a tendency to be too honourable” still refuses to do the honourable thing.
It’s hard to imagine how Andrew Mountbatten Windsor could sink any lower in the public’s esteem. But his capacity to surprise and shock us all seems to know no bounds.
