Joy Villa walked the Grammys red carpet Sunday night wearing a blue jumpsuit with the words “Scientology Kills” across the chest. Villa paired the blue jumpsuit with a pink fuzzy coat that had little notes attached with names of people who allegedly have had ties with Scientology.
The singer is used to making a literal statement with her Grammys red carpet looks, often championing conservative topics, such as President Donald Trump and the anti-abortion movement. At the 2017 Grammy awards, Villa wore a dress that read “Make America Great Again” and then, at the 2018 show, she wore a white dress with a fetus inside a rainbow, along with the words “Choose Life.” At the 2020 Grammys, she again supported Trump with a dress that read “impeached and re-elected” on the back.
“I was working twelve-hour days, mentally depleted, spiritually numb, emotionally unraveling,” Villa wrote. “I was deeply depressed. So depressed that I began to scare myself. I did not want to die, but I no longer wanted to live.”
She continued, saying Scientology took credit for her success.
“Every achievement was attributed not to God, not to talent, not to perseverance, but to auditing, donations, and loyalty to the organization,” Villa wrote. “My success became propaganda. My life became marketing.”
One of the names on Villa’s jacket is Philip Gale, a software internet developer, who died by suicide in 1998. Leaving Scientology was said to have been a “traumatic” experience for him.
