Promising an intensely passionate, modern, triangular love story, the upcoming film Mon Maaney Na starring Ritwik Bhoumik and Hiya Chatterjee has already got lovers of romantic movies excited and waiting eagerly for its release. Injecting fresh interest in the film in the run-up to its release is the latest song from its impressive soundtrack, that dropped last weekend.
Titled Jao na, the song is one of heartache and focuses on the sorrow, pain and loneliness that follows rejection and heartbreak. A song about the pangs of lost love and lingering memories along with a secret yearning for the loved one, it is designed as a poignant addition to Mon Maaney Na’s soundtrack, leaning into sentimentalism, nostalgia and emotionally-charged storytelling. Composed and written by Nilayan Chatterjee, the lyrics convey a forsaken lover’s anger, denial and acceptance of distance, separation and loss. From longing and reminiscence to retreat and withdrawal into solitude, the song carves out a heart-rending emotional journey that is sure to resonate with anyone who has experienced heartbreak. Ishan Mitra delivers a soul-stirring vocal performance, perfectly capturing the sadness and vulnerability of the lyrics. His soft, vocal quality evokes raw, heartfelt emotion, delicately expressing the melancholy and quiet pain of unrequited love.
Highlighting the painful aftermath of a relationship, it depicts a miserable Bidisha (Hiya) in the throes of a heartbreak that completely exposes her character’s emotional fragility. Shattered in mind and spirit, she is devastated by her loss, misses her ex lover and expresses her inability to move on. Hiya brings to life her character of a girl who is suffering her first heartbreak with great conviction and sincerity; revealing her jealousy, anguish, anger and acceptance of loss through her desolate eyes and her quivering lips perhaps more powerfully than through her angry outbursts and meltdowns.
Jao na also touches on themes of staying true to one’s feelings even after their partner has moved on; its lyrics capturing the emotional state of waiting and holding on to memories of a love that was once intense, even though it has now faded away. It acts almost as a plea, expressing an inability to forget the past and making known their desire for their partner to return.
An interesting contrast depicted in Jao na’s video is the way Ritwik’s character Rahul reacts to heartbreak. His quieter and more stoic attitude to the loss of love, unlike Bidisha’s, subtly brings out the differences in their personalities through this song. Ritwik’s range as a romantic lover is also demonstrated in the song through his passionate scenes with another girl (Sweta Mishra), which adds further complexity to the song, suggesting a plot with a double triangular romance and further expanding the curiosity of fans.
Directed by Rahool Mukherjee, Mon Maaney Na, a story about fragile, romantic relationships, and also starring Soumya Mukherjee, Kharaj Mukherjee and Saswata Chatterjee in key roles, releases in theatres on February 13.
