Meghan Markle’s look in her latest social media post appears to be a nod to the royal family which many fans seem to have missed.
The Duchess of Sussex, 44, has just announced a new collaboration between her lifestyle brand, As Ever, and Compartes Chocolatier, to mark Valentine’s Day.
In a post shared on the official As Ever page, Meghan was seen holding red balloons attached to a string tied at the end around a jar of her jam.
The former Suits actress wore a strapless black Roland Mouret dress with floral texture in the image, which was shared on Instagram with the caption, “A sweet surprise!

It has now emerged that the dress Meghan wore was the same one she had on while attending the Royal Foundation Dinner with her husband, Prince Harry, her brother-in-law, Prince William, and her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, in November 2018.
At the time, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had only been married for a few months and Meghan was expecting their first child, Prince Archie, who is now six years old.
In a photo shared on social media by singer-songwriter Tom Walker, Meghan could be seen styling the dress with her hair pulled back and her signature glowy makeup.
Tom wrote on X, previously called Twitter, “I had the absolute honour of performing for and meeting The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge & The Duke and Duchess of Sussex for the annual @kensingtonroyal #RoyalFoundation dinner.
“Thanks to the talented @thatsingingbird from @wearefulleffect for joining me for my last song.”
However, many royal fans appear to have missed Meghan’s nod to her previous life in Britain before the Sussexes decided to step back from their duties and moved to the US.
They now live in Montecito, California, with their two children, Archie and his little sister, Princess Lilibet, who is now four years old.
In fact, Meghan faced harsh criticism online by social media users who compared her her latest promotional photo to an iconic horror film character.
According to some critics, Meghan’s pose in the Valentine’s Day post resembled an infamous scene from the It films, which are adapted from Stephen King’s novel of the same name.
In those movies, Pennywise, a sinister clown character, clutches multiple red balloons while hunting and frightening children. Social media users shared their reactions across various platforms.
One X user posted a side-by-side comparison of Meghan and Pennywise, asking. “What is Meghan trying to tell us?”
Another responded, “OK. She actually looks like Pennywise without makeup.”
Additional users shared numerous images of the notorious clown character, with a third commenting, “Meghan is more terrifying than the clown.”
A fourth critic declared, “Scary!” A fifth chimed in, “Penny wise does it better.” Another commenter stated, “Pennywise Wins.”
