Seattle Seahawks won Super Bowl 60. Are they headed to Disney?

Seattle Seahawks won Super Bowl 60. Are they headed to Disney?

The most famous flock of Seahawks is flying straight for Disney following Sunday’s Super Bowl. But which park are they going to?

The Seattle Seahawks defeated the New England Patriots in a 29-13 blowout, with some team members heading to Disney to celebrate.

The winning team from the NFL’s annual Super Bowl game is typically honored at one of Disney’s theme parks. The Most Valuable Player is featured in the iconic “I’m going to Disney World” commercial. These ads go back decades and have featured football icons such as Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and last year’s Super Bowl winner, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts.

So, are they going to the most magical place or the happiest place on Earth? Here’s what to know.

Are the Seahawks going to Walt Disney World or Disneyland on Monday?

Disney confirmed the Seattle Seahawks are going to Disneyland in Anaheim, California, posting a video of quarterback Sam Darnold and Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III saying the iconic “We’re going to Disneyland” line.

The two will headline a parade at Disneyland Resort on Monday, February 9.

Why do Super Bowl winners go to Disney after the game?

It all started with a comment made at dinner in 1987. According to The Wrap, Disney CEO Michael Eisner’s wife, Jane, was inspired by Voyager pilot Burt Rotan, who replied that he was “going to Disneyland” after traveling the world.

Needing something to breathe new life into the parks, Disney marketing officials got to work on a new ad campaign, landing on the upcoming 1987 Super Bowl. The outlet said officials determined who the MVPs would be and offered deals to appear in the commercial.

Giants quarterback and MVP Phil Simms was the first to say the post-game phrase as part of Disney’s now-iconic advertising campaign. According to ESPN, Disney paid Simms $75,000.

“I said, ‘Wow that’s crazy and I want no part of it,’ ” Simms said in a documentary called “The Most Magical Story on Earth: 50 Years of Walt Disney World.” “My agent was just beating me over the head with it. And I said, ‘OK, just shut up, I’ll do it.’”

Has it happened every year since?

Since 1987, the phrase has been uttered every year except for one; ESPN writes that there was a hiatus from the ad campaign in 2005.

Ironically, this Super Bowl was played in Jacksonville, Florida, roughly 150 miles from Disney World.

When was the last time the Super Bowl champions went to Disney World?

After the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs during Super Bowl 59, Hurts led a parade at Magic Kingdom to celebrate the win.
