A former FBI profiler has provided forensic insight into the masked man seen in surveillance footage from Nancy Guthrie’s home before she went missing last week.
Her daughter, Today Show host Savannah Guthrie, has not yet had “proof of life” from the suspected kidnappers, despite two ransom demands having been made, most recently for $6 million, and activity late on Tuesday in the Bitcoin account where payment was expected to be deposited, reports TMZ.
In the most major development in the case so far, a person was arrested in connection with the kidnapping, although it is unclear if that person is the suspect seen in the chilling doorbell footage. It comes after an ex-FBI agent revealed the hidden codeword that Savannah used in her message to the kidnappers.
On Tuesday, ex-FBI profiler Mary Ellen O’Toole spoke with celebrity.land’s Laura Coates about the doorbell footage, giving her moment-by-moment expert assessment of the body language and demeanor of the masked and gloved intruder.
“He doesn’t seem to manifest really strong signs of being nervous… He’s not racing around nor does he appear jittery. That’s impressive to me,” she said. “You can only get that calmness from two things: your personality and your experience being in situations like this before,” she added.

She emphasized the individual’s capacity “to adjust pretty quickly” to their environment, in particular the doorbell camera, which they must have known would be recording their every move. “Take a look at the gloves the person was wearing. They were so thick it was difficult for him to even move his hands… He was able to come up with something that allowed him to at least probably smudge the front of that lens,” O’Toole said.
This all suggests “a certain amount of planning” when added to details such as the clothing, backpack and mask all made to “minimize the amount of physical evidence left at the scene,” she said.
And when it comes to any interview with investigators, O’Toole pointed to the importance of picking out the right person to question them. She said this person should be “unflappable,” adding, “What’s important as an interviewer is to match their emotion.”
Angelica Carrillo, Public Information Officer, told the Express US, “Earlier today, Pima County Sheriff’s Department deputies detained a subject during a traffic stop south of Tucson. The subject is currently being questioned in connection to the Nancy Guthrie investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.”
FBI Director Kash Patel released footage on Tuesday capturing a masked gunman at Nancy’s property. “Law enforcement has uncovered these previously inaccessible new images showing an armed individual appearing to have tampered with the camera at Nancy Guthrie’s front door the morning of her disappearance,” he posted on X.
Security footage shows someone completely concealed in a face mask and gloves, sporting a zipped jacket, pants and sneakers. A backpack hung from their shoulders while a pistol sat holstered at their side.
The masked intruder visited Nancy’s property at the moment investigators believe the 84-year-old was taken. Her doorbell camera went dark at 1.47 a.m. that morning. Nancy vanished on February 1, prompting her family to alert authorities the same day. Her last confirmed sighting came the evening before when relatives shared dinner with her before driving her home.
