Wisconsin grandmother, Frances Dahlke, said she rode on a plane for the very first time on a Feb. 8 flight to Chicago that was piloted by her grandson, Alex Shupe
She told a local outlet that she decided, “I’ll fly when Alex gets his pilot’s license”
Dahlke, Shupe’s parents and brother all got to ride on the flight and experience his piloting, something which Shupe called a “truly memorable experience”
A Wisconsin grandmother got to cross off a big bucket list item — all thanks to her grandson.
Frances Dahlke, 88, had never ridden a plane before until Sunday, Feb. 8, when her grandson, Alex Shupe, who is a pilot, flew a plane from La Crosse Regional Airport in La Crosse, Wis., to Chicago.
Dahlke told CBS Chicago that she decided she would finally take to the air “when Alex gets his pilot’s license.”
And Shupe did just that and was able to bring the flying experience to his 88-year-old grandmother for the first time on that Sunday flight. Dahlke even got several perks thanks to her grandson, including experiencing her first flight in first class style.
“It’s very, very nice. I felt like a spoiled celebrity. I had the first seat in first class,” Dahlke recalled to CBS Chicago.
“As an airline employee, you get these flight benefits,” added her grandson, Shupe. “I was able to throw her name on a list and then put her on the standby list.”
Dahlke told the outlet that she was particularly excited about feeling and seeing everything for the first time, especially, “the sensation [of flying], you know, and of course watching the clouds out if there are any out there.”

She said her family made sure that she was fully prepared and packed some Dramamine — a medication that prevents and treats motion sickness symptoms like nausea, vomiting and dizziness — just in case she felt ill. This led to another item being crossed off her list of things she’s never done.
“They made sure — they told me to take Dramamine first. I’ve never taken Dramamine in my life either,” Dahlke told CBS Chicago with a laugh.
On board the flight, Dahike made sure to snap a photo with her beloved grandson. However, she wasn’t the only family member on the flight.
Shupe shared several photos on Instagram of his parents and brother also on the same flight over to Chicago. They not only got to see Shupe in action as a pilot, but also get a look at him in the cockpit.
“Career highlight for me to finally be able to fly my family on my flight from La Crosse. First time ever my parents and brother have flown with me and first ever flight for my 88 year old grandma. A truly memorable experience,” Shupe wrote on Instagram.
