23 Celebs Who Fumbled Their Careers Horribly

Survivor fans went into the Season 49 finale on bated breath. That’s because they knew, at the end of the three-hour extravaganza, they would be treated to their first look at the highly anticipated Survivor 50. It had been almost seven months since the vast majority of the 24-person star-studded cast was announced, and now we would be getting a glance of what it was like for old-school legends and new era standouts to meet in this Fijian particle collider.

Even with so much known information, there was one major thing that took everyone by surprise in the Survivor 50 trailer: The celebrity factor.

The video revealed that the milestone season will also highlight some of the most famous Survivor superfans, albeit in rather unconventional ways. Jimmy Fallon and Billie Eilish have branded advantages named after them. And Survivor 50 will even feature in-person guest appearances from Zac Brown and MrBeast, who will enter the game with fish and a mysterious briefcase, respectively.

Survivor has certainly attracted a number of high-profile fans over the past 26 years, including Angelina Jolie, Adam Scott, and Dominic Monaghan. Jeanette McCurdy even revealed her fandom when she showed she was watching the show during a TikTok video celebrating the release of her new book. The highest-profile Survivor 50 cast member, Mike White, was a longtime follower of the show, even suggesting production elements to Probst before his own time on the island (and subsequent time on The White Lotus, directly inspired by his experience in the game).

All that said, this is far and away the biggest spotlight celebrity superfans have received in the show’s history. And, when talking with Probst at SCAD TVFest, where he was being honored with the Legend of Television Award, the Emmy winner says the concept came from a deeper interpretation of the Season 50 theme.

“‘In the Hands of the Fans’ was the first idea that I wrote down as a title,” he says, referring to fans voting on a number of elements, both cosmetic and structural, for the upcoming season. “And ‘ve met so many famous people through Survivor, people I’ve become friends with. So I was thinking, ‘Well, they’re fans. And just because they’re famous shouldn’t exclude them from being part of ‘In the Hands of the Fans.'”

He continues, “And I’ve had famous people say to me, ‘I’d love to do it. But me and my schedule, I can’t do 39 days. I could never do the whole show. But if you could ever use me for something, let me know.’ Well, there never really was a point. So it was always kind of noodling in my head, ‘Who are all the people who have already said that to me, so that I don’t have to ask anybody?'”

Probst cites Zac Brown as one key example of using that rolodex. Apparently, the country superstar had once told him, “If you ever need me for a weekend…” And the host and executive producer chose to take that literally, calling in that favor to get him out in Fiji for a drive-by appearance.

Probst says the origins of each celebrity appearance (in person or in absentia) will be revealed gradually as the season progresses. But he did tease that we will be getting one very quickly into Survivor 50. During the three-hour premiere, airing Feb. 25, one lucky castaway will get their hands on the enigmatic “Billie Eilish Boomerang Idol.” And the reveal was a chance to give that person an early blindside.

“One of the cool things we did was we had Billie Eilish be a part of the season,” Probst outlines. “And it was really fun to communicate with her about how she can be involved. And she wanted to be involved with an idol. So we have this ‘Billie Eilish Boomerang Idol.'”

“I won’t explain how it plays,” he continues. “But I will say that it’s found in the first episode, and it’s really fun to watch Survivor players pick up the note and go, ‘Hey, it’s me, Billie. Billie Eilish.’ And they go, ‘[Looks around, confused.]’ Because they didn’t know this. This is something we’re promoting now, but we told nobody on our crew. It was really fun to see the first footage of somebody going, ‘I don’t understand what’s happening. Why is it called a Boomerang Idol? What does that mean?'”

The reception behind the reveal of celebrity involvement in Survivor 50 was polarizing, to say the least. Fans were deeply concerned that the stars’ appearance signals a major change in direction for the venerated reality series, with outside influences set to significantly impact the game, something some feel is unnecessary given the caliber of the returning cast. Probst, however, assuages any concerns about the role these celebs will play in Season 50, especially compared to the airtime they received in that first trailer.

“They don’t change the show in any way,” he affirms. “It felt like maybe we could find a way to bring them in and just enhance a little bit. It’s still Survivor, but they might have some authorship in the game, a little bit, that you might have to deal with. That was really the idea, just to celebrate the fact that all types of people watch and love Survivor.”

Knowing that, we can look forward to seeing all 24 contestants — and a Billie Eilish Boomerang Idol — in Survivor 50’s three-hour premiere on Wednesday, Feb. 25.
