Fox News host Greg Gutfeld on Wednesday proposed a strategy to advance the investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, suggesting that NBC’s Savannah Guthrie, the victim’s daughter-in-law, voluntarily submit to a polygraph test.
The suggestion aired during a segment of Fox News’ The Five, where Gutfeld discussed the idea with legal analyst Paul Mauro.
“So, Paul, I want to revisit my strategy to solving this case, and that would be having the least likely suspect, Savannah Guthrie, offer to do a polygraph, which will then put necessary pressure on others inside and outside the circle to do the same,” Gutfeld said.
“Since no one has been ruled out, it’s one step forward in ruling in, and anybody who says no or bristles looks unusual. What do you say to that?”
Mauro responded by noting that polygraphs are typically inadmissible in court but may help guide investigations.
“My understanding as of now is that they haven’t done anything relative to a polygraph,” Mauro said.
“I’m not sure we would have necessarily heard, but I think we would with the way things have been going out here. And as we all know, it’s not admissible in court but it can be a pointer… I get that. You’re trying to smoke people out that might be close to the situation.”
Nancy Guthrie, 84, disappeared on the night of January 31 after having dinner with her daughter, Annie Guthrie, and Annie’s husband, Tommaso Cioni.
Earlier this week, investigators released footage showing a masked, possibly armed individual approaching Guthrie’s front door.
The FBI confirmed a black glove was discovered Wednesday, about 1.5 miles from her Tucson-area home.
Gutfeld previously raised the polygraph idea during Monday’s broadcast, saying, “Have they given everyone polygraphs? I don’t believe they have. I think Savannah Guthrie might wanna volunteer to do a poly and say, ‘I just don’t want people to speculate that I might be involved.'”
He added, “It puts everyone else in her circle obligated to do a poly.”
“They might have declined to do it before, but if you actually say, ‘I’m willing to do it,’ and everybody else decides to do it, great.”
