Prince Harry was reportedly ‘incredulous’ when he requested royal protection for Meghan prior to their marriage, only to be denied. It has emerged that the Duke of Sussex felt it was “one rule for him and another for me” after learning that the Princess of Wales received unofficial palace guidance whilst dating his brother, Prince William, and later received 24/7 protection as soon as they became engaged.
A new biography, William and Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story, penned by The Mirror’s royal editor Russell Myers, discloses that Harry then appealed to his father, the then Prince Charles, and William for intervention. However, neither took action, igniting a long-lasting and bitter feud.
The book is the first joint biography of the Prince and Princess of Wales in over a decade and also underscores the couple’s resilience and commitment in the face of adversity, from the relentless media scrutiny and controversies of their 2022 Caribbean tour, to the shocking cancer diagnoses of both the princess and King Charles.
The book also unveils for the first time the behind-the-scenes context of the prince and princess’s reaction to the departure from royal life by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the establishment of the ‘Cambridge way’, and the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
It discloses that Harry requested action be taken when Meghan became a target on social media due to her biracial heritage, but was informed that any protection would not be provided until they married. Charles then maintained he could not become involved as it was a government decision, despite the assistance given to Kate.
Meanwhile, the book also discloses how Kate had less interest than William in trying to prevent the Duke and Duchess of Sussex from walking away from royal life, believing Prince Harry quitting his role was “inevitable.”
