A County Durham town has unveiled a year-long calendar of community events.

Spennymoor Town Council’s 2026 programme promises free family fun days, music events, heritage celebrations, and seasonal favourites, all designed to bring residents together and boost community spirit.

Cllr Liz Maddison, Mayor of Spennymoor, said: “We recognise the importance for families, especially in the current climate, to have access to high-quality events throughout the year without the barrier of cost.

“From dancing at Party in the Park to honouring the service of our Armed Forces, through to our incredible Christmas celebrations, this programme ensures there is something for everyone in our community.”

The packed schedule begins in March with an International Women’s Day event celebrating leadership and creativity.

It will feature appearances from Dame Susan Snowdon, Lord Lieutenant of County Durham; Jill Cole, chair of Culture Durham; Michelle Cooper, CEO of Point North; and mural artist Hazel Oakes.

The morning event on Sunday, March 8 will include talks, artistic expression, and a preview of the exhibition Echoes of Her North: The Quiet Architects of Our Communities, which opens the following day at the Bob Abley Gallery.

A number of other events will also return in 2026.

These include the council’s annual Family Fun Day in support of Armed Forces Week, the crowd-pulling Party in the Park, and the Big Brass Bash.

Celebrate Spennymoor -with its well-loved horticultural show – will also make a comeback, alongside weekly summer activities in Jubilee Park.

The council will continue its support for wider regional events, including the Spennymoor Gala and the Durham Miners’ Gala.

It is also enhancing its heritage programming with Town Hall events tied to national and regional heritage days.

The autumn and winter programme includes Halloween festivities, Fireworks Night, Remembrance and Armistice commemorations, the Christmas Tree Lights Switch-On, school Santa visits, and the annual Carol Service.

Cllr Billy McAloon, leader of Spennymoor Town Council, said: “We are proud to invest in this vibrant programme of free events, helping bring people together to celebrate together – something that makes Spennymoor very special.

“These events are about more than entertainment, they strengthen community ties, support local pride and create opportunities for families to make lasting memories together.”

The council said its events scheme also aims to draw visitors and boost trade for local businesses while nurturing a sense of belonging that spans all ages.

The International Women’s Day event will run from 10am to 12.30pm at Spennymoor Town Hall, with tickets priced at £3 and available via Eventbrite.

Further details and a full calendar of events will be published soon on Spennymoor Town Council’s website and social media channels.
