America’s Next Top Model was always problematic, but the documentary paints its origins as slightly more pure. The initial intentions seem to have been positive ones. But the bullying, body shaming and gaslighting that ensued prove that even the best intentions can go astray.
Many of the show’s models return in this documentary to share their side of the story—and believe me when I say their words are haunting. Banks does her damnedest to push the “pure intentions” storyline, but it’s hard to take it seriously when hearing the heartbreaking stories from the former contestants.
Needless to say, I couldn’t binge the show fast enough. Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model is streaming now on Netflix.
