Hilary Duff’s new music reflects her ‘complicated’ family dynamics
Hilary Duff is opening up about deeply personal family tensions in her latest music.
In a new Glamour cover interview, the singer revealed that her upcoming album Luck… or Something seems to take inspiration from strained relationships with her sister Haylie Duff and her father Robert Duff.
Duff recently performed the track We Don’t Talk during her Small Rooms, Big Nerves concerts, prompting fans to speculate that the emotional lyrics reference an alleged rift with Haylie.
“I’m not sure when it happened / Not even sure what it was about,” she sang the lyrics, later reflecting on coming from “the same home, the same blood.”
Another song, The Optimist, seemingly touches on her relationship with Robert, who is divorced from her mother, Susan.
In the track, Duff sings, “I wish I could sleep on planes and that my father would really love me.”
Explaining her decision to address family matters now, the singer told the outlet that family relationships naturally take up the most space in a person’s life.
She added that being born into a family does not guarantee it stays intact, noting she finally felt ready to share her story.
