Zendaya and Robert Pattinson did their first interview for The Drama, in which Zendaya made rare comments about her fiancé, Tom Holland.

After spending months out of the spotlight, Zendaya has begun her press tour for her film The Drama with her co-star Robert Pattinson. The two actors spoke to each other for Interview magazine, and while neither spoke about their real-life relationships with their partners, Zendaya revealed a little about how her fiancé, Tom Holland, shaped her perception of Pattinson. She also detailed why she has kept her personal life private, not only for herself but also for the sake of her performances.
Pattinson asked if Zendaya thought being a public figure makes it more difficult to disappear into the characters she plays.
She replied, “Yes and no. Something I admire about you is you keep so much of your life to yourself, which is a beautiful thing, especially having a family [Pattinson and his partner, Suki Waterhouse, have a daughter]. I’m learning how to balance those things. At the end of the day, you’re a public figure, there’s nothing you can do, but some things are meant for yourself and for your loved ones, and then also allowing for that space between the anonymity of you, so that you can play someone else and they won’t necessarily always put you in—I mean, we just talked about being eloquent. Here I am stumbling over my words, trying to explain what I’m trying to say. But I do try to have privacy, not just for characters, but for me in real life. I try to be honest to who I am when I am in public, but I also try to keep things for myself.”
The actress also made rare comments about Holland while discussing her preconceived notions of Pattinson when she first met him.
She said Pattinson probably knew “what I thought about you before I met you.”
Pattinson added, “Because Tom [Holland] had already told you.”
“Truthfully, I met you because we had common friends, and you were always pretty quiet and chill, which is a little different from my experience of Rob,” she said. “You didn’t say much, and I was like, ‘Ooh, mysterious!’ Then I talked to Tom and he was like, ‘No, he’s super fun and always laughing and joking,’ and I was like, ‘Really? I haven’t experienced that side of him, I guess.’”
“That’s so depressing,” Pattinson replied. “I wish I could stay in the mysterious. I’ve learned again and again that if you just don’t speak, people are like, ‘Wow. You’re really intimidating,’ but I just can’t fucking maintain it.”
She brought up Holland again later in the conversation when discussing a habit of Pattinson’s that she picked up on. “Tom is right, you laugh at everything you say, so it’s very hard to tell when you’re being serious and when you’re not,” she told Pattinson. “And then you’ll start a sentence and you’ll say it really fast, and then you’ll stop yourself and go, ‘Nevermind.’ And then you’ll always eventually end up saying it, but I have to be like, ‘No, what is it, Rob? What are you thinking?’”
“That sounds terrible,” Pattinson quipped, before adding with a laugh, “That’s not even true.”
The Drama marks the first of Pattinson and Zendaya’s three films together this year. They are also in Dune: Part Three and The Odyssey.
