Sunil Grover calls mimicry a tribute, says he isn’t worried about personality rights cases unless misused, and believes celebrating public figures should continue respectfully.

Sunil Grover calls mimicry a tribute.
Sunil Grover is one of the integral parts of The Kapil Sharma Show. His recent mimicry of Aamir Khan has left the audience in awe, so much so that at the screening of Happy Patel Ek Khatarnaak Jaasoos, paps referred to Sunil Grover as the real Aamir. Meanwhile, cases of celebrities demanding protection of personality rights have seen a surge in the recent past. Amid this, Sunil reacted to the issue in a recent chat.
Speaking to HT, Sunil shared, “Jab tak mere pe case nahi aata, tab tak to main nahi soch raha,” and added, “For me, it’s a tribute.”
Sunil Grover further continued and shared, “One of my friends told me that I should get an order for my personality rights, and I told him, ‘Sharam nahin aati hai? Main duniya bhar ke logon ki nakal kar raha hun aur tu mujhe bol raha hai.’ I understand the problem when someone is misusing it to maybe endorse a brand or a thought which the artiste doesn’t want to. But these personalities have become so big ke ab wo public ke bhi hi gaye hain, and we, as people, celebrate them.”
“The celebration should continue, but yes, below-the-belt and offensive jokes, I don’t support them. I don’t like to talk about their personal lives too. Jo garima mein hai wo theek hai, uske paar jo jaye, hum koshish karte hain ki waisa na ho. Personally, when I impersonate people, I celebrate them and it’s my tribute to them, not to make fun of them in any way. So, I think they should give away celebration rights,” he concluded.
Known for his impeccable comic timing, chameleon-like character transformations, and an ability to make audiences laugh without ever losing emotional depth, Sunil Grover has secured a lasting place in Indian pop culture. Characters like Gutthi, Dr Mashoor Gulati, and Rinku Bhabhi brought something fresh to Indian comedy, turning Grover into a household name and a favourite among audiences of all ages.
Sunil is currently seen in The Great Indian Kapil Sharma Show. While the camaraderie between Sunil Grover and Kapil Sharma occasionally made headlines for off-screen tensions, it was their on-screen chemistry that truly resonated with viewers.
