Nick Reiner was photographed during his most recent court appearance for the murders of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner.

Nick, 32, arrived in the Los Angeles courtroom on Monday, February 23, wearing a brown jumpsuit. He sported a shaved head with facial hair. While in the courtroom, Nick sat behind glass.

During the arraignment, Nick pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances. He waived his right to a speedy trial. His next court date is scheduled for April 29. Nick will remain in prison with no bail.

Rob and Michele were found dead in their Brentwood, California, home on December 14, 2025. They were 78 and 70, respectively. In addition to Nick, Rob and Michele shared son Jake, 34, and daughter Romy, 28. The When Harry Met Sally director was also the adoptive father of his ex-wife Penny Marshall’s daughter, Tracy, 61.

“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner,” read a statement from the Reiner family shared via Variety. “We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”

Rob and Michele’s cause of death was determined to be “multiple sharp force injuries” and ruled a homicide, per the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.

Nick was subsequently arrested in connection to his parents’ deaths. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Nick faces life in prison without parole or the death penalty if convicted.

Nick made his first court appearance on December 17, 2025, alongside lawyer Alan Jackson, who represented him at the time. During the hearing, Jackson claimed it was “too early” for Nick to enter a plea.

Earlier this year, Nick returned to court and Jackson announced he was stepping down as Nick’s counsel. Nick’s arraignment was subsequently postponed.

“Circumstances beyond our control, but more importantly, circumstances beyond Nick’s control, have dictated that, sadly, it’s made it impossible for us to continue our representation of Nick,” Jackson told reporters after the hearing. “I’m legally and I’m ethically prohibited from explaining all the reasons why, I know that’s a question on everyone’s mind.”

Jackson added that he and his team remained “deeply committed” to Nick and his “best interests.”

“In fact, we know, we’re not just convinced, we know that the legal process will reveal the true facts of the circumstances surrounding Nick’s case,” Jackson said. “What we’ve learned, and you can take this to the bank, is that, pursuant to the law in California, Nick Reiner is not guilty of murder.”

Public defender Kimberly Greene was appointed to represent Nick. Following the change, Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman told reporters that the office was “fully confident that a jury will convict Nick Reiner beyond a reasonable doubt of the brutal murders of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, and do so unanimously.”

A spokesperson for Rob and Michele’s family also released a statement about Nick’s legal proceedings.

“They have the utmost trust in the legal process and will not comment further on matters related to the legal proceedings,” the spokesperson said to the New York Times.
