Mr Morton said: “When you see a former Prince being questioned and his homes searched like any other citizen, that mystery evaporates. It is replaced by the cold, hard reality of the legal system. For the public, that transition is jarring. It removes the deference that has protected the monarchy for centuries. You can’t be ‘magical’ and ‘under investigation’ at the same time.”

We are looking at a future that looks more like the Spanish or Dutch monarchies. The days of a sprawling Royal Family with dozens of minor royals living in grace-and-favour homes are over.”
