Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested and might face trial, so naturally everyone’s wondering when he’s going to be removed from the line of succession. Like, sure, he’s pretty far down, but there’s still a chance he could become King one day, which poses some…obvious issues.
There’s been mounting pressure on King Charles to remove his disgraced brother from the official line, but Daily Mail reporter Richard Eden says there are “disturbing rumors” coming out of Buckingham Palace that he doesn’t plan to.
One source tells Eden that the King doesn’t want to “meddle,” while another adds “He thinks it would be opening up a can of worms. For example, if Andrew is removed, would his daughters have to be, too? He thinks they are blameless and do not deserve to be punished.” Yet another insider says “If he strips him of his place in the line of succession, this could be interpreted as a sign that he thinks Andrew is guilty.”
But it might not be up to Charles. According to the BBC, the British government itself is “considering introducing legislation to remove Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor from the line of royal succession.” Meanwhile, The Guardian reports that “Buckingham Palace will not oppose plans to remove Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor from the royal line of succession” and that “King Charles would not stand in the way of parliament if it wanted to ensure the former prince could never ascend to the throne.”
As a reminder, Andrew is 8th in line to the throne after Prince William, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis, Prince Harry, Prince Archie, and Princess Lilibet.
