Florida connections to The Oscars 2026, ‘Wicked’ snubbed
Florida-born multi-hyphenate movie star Ariana Grande would have been Florida’s biggest connection to The Academy Awards, but the “Wicked” sequel was snubbed from the nominations completely.
The “Wicked: For Good” snub shocked “Wicked” fans. The first “Wicked” movie earned 10 nominations and won two awards at the 2025 Oscars ceremony.
“Grande’s snub was perhaps the most surprising, especially considering some awards followers saw her as a front-runner to win the best supporting actress Oscar earlier in the season,” USA TODAY reported following the snub.
Florida does have one strong connection at the 2026 Academy Awards, though, and it isn’t an actor or actress. “The Perfect Neighbor,” a Netflix documentary about a fatal dispute between two Ocala neighbors, is nominated for the “Documentary Feature Film” Academy Award.
What is ‘The Perfect Neighbor’ about?
Family say they can heal now.
Judge Robert Hodges sentenced Susan Lorincz to 25 years in prison for manslaughter with a firearm Monday afternoon, November 25, 2024 at the Marion County Judicial Center in Ocala, Fl. A jury found her guilty of manslaughter in August for the 2023 fatal shooting of her neighbor, Ajike “Aj” Owens.
The Netflix documentary about the infamous shooting death in Florida garnered a whopping 16.7 million views in the first three days after being released in October 2025. “The Perfect Neighbor” tells the story of Ocala resident Susan Lorincz, 61, who was convicted of manslaughter after shooting and killing her neighbor, Ajike “AJ” Shantrell Owens in 2023.
Lorincz was 58 years old at the time of the incident, fatally shooting Owens through a locked front door in front of her son. Owens was a 35-year-old mother of four in Ocala and a neighbor of Lorincz.
The documentary showcases a timeline of the neighbors’ feud through deputy bodycam footage, police interviews and 911 calls, resulting in the fatal incident on June 2, 2023. Netflix wrote that this documentary is about “fear, prejudice and Stand Your Ground laws.”
