Fans of the Royal Family will soon get the chance to see the private rooms inside the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Scotland to mark the centenary of Queen Elizabeth II’s birth. The rare opportunity is available only this year, with tours running for 100 days to discover the history of the rooms and learn how they were used by Queen Elizabeth II during her 70-year reign.
Queen Elizabeth II was born in London on April 21, 1926, to the then-Duke and Duchess of York. Her Late Majesty reigned for seven decades and sadly passed away at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle. As part of her final journey back to Windsor, her coffin was taken to the Palace of Holyroodhouse for one night, before being taken to nearby St Giles’ Cathedral to lie in state.
The Palace of Holyroodhouse is the monarch’s official residence in Edinburgh and is the home of centuries of Scottish royal history. Just like Queen Elizabeth II did during her reign, King Charles normally spends a week at the property during Holyrood Week, also known as Royal Week in Scotland. The monarch stays at the Palace of Holyroodhouse while attending meetings and visiting various regions of Scotland, with the stay usually taking place from the end of June to the beginning of July.
The Palace of Holyroodhouse sits at the tip of the Royal Mile, the Scottish capital’s most famous street. The public is able to visit the palace and marvel at some of the historic State Apartments, the ruins of the 12th-century Holyrood Abbey and the incredible royal garden.
Queen Elizabeth II Private Apartment Tours, available only in 2026, will run daily for 100 days from Thursday, 21 May to 10 September 2026. Tours are limited and must be booked in addition to the standard admission ticket to the Palace of Holyroodhouse.
