THE RUNDOWN
Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes stepped out together in an unexpected way this week. During Gosling’s March 5 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the actor surprised Mendes with a birthday celebration, bringing her onstage for a rare joint moment in front of the audience.
Mendes had been watching Gosling’s interview backstage when he decided to get the crowd involved in the surprise. Before she came out, Gosling shared his plan and joked, “Here’s the thing, you might find me in the Hudson River tomorrow.”
Once Mendes joined him onstage, she first addressed teachers who were in the audience. “I love teachers so much. We owe so much to you guys; you’re so underpaid, and you’re so…I just thank you so much. I had so many amazing teachers.”
She then turned to Fallon and playfully asked, “You’ll cut all this, right?”
Addressing the audience again, Mendes continued, “I had so many amazing teachers mentor me, and I just want to say thank you to you guys.”
Gosling then revealed another surprise tied to the celebration. “And we actually have some band directors from North Bergen High School,” he said.
Fallon introduced the performance that followed: “Here to play ‘Happy Birthday’ to Eva Mendes, please welcome the North Bergen High School marching band.”
The marching band entered the studio and performed “Happy Birthday” as Gosling sang along beside Mendes. Mendes thanked Gosling with a kiss on the cheek as the celebration concluded.
The appearance marked a notably rare public moment for the longtime couple, who has largely kept their relationship out of the public eye since they began dating after meeting on the set of The Place Beyond the Pines in 2011. They share two daughters and made their last red carpet appearance together in September 2012.
