Tonight Harry Styles will release Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally. In some of the earlier interviews pegged to the new album cycle, Styles mentioned the music was inspired in part by getting to go out dancing and be an audience member at shows himself after his latest tour wrapped up. One such artist who Styles claimed influenced him was LCD Soundsystem. Now Styles has revealed that Radiohead’s hotly-anticipated 2025 residency also made a big creative impact on him.
Styles talked about the making of the album in a new interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe. “I went to see Radiohead in Berlin, and felt so part of the audience,” Styles began. He continued:
I had a very clear moment of, “This is why I get on stage.” I’m watching this and feeling everything that’s happening around me in the crowd. There’s people picking up each other’s things and people are bringing each other things. It’s this sense of strangers looking at each other and massaging each other’s shoulders when someone’s emotional and looking into the eyes of a stranger and screaming out a chorus together. I had a moment of like, “I’m there so that people can have this,” you know? I’m soundtracking this.
Later on in the interview, Lowe asked Styles about his former One Direction bandmate Liam Payne, who died in 2024. Styles recalled:
I think there was a period when he passed away where I really struggled with acknowledging how strange it is to have people kind of own a part of your grief in a way. I have such strong feelings towards my friend passing away. And then suddenly being aware [that] there’s maybe a desire from other people for you to convey that in some way, or it means you’re not feeling what you’re feeling, or something. It’s so difficult to lose a friend. It’s difficult to lose any friend, but it’s so difficult to lose a friend who’s so like you in so many ways. I saw someone with the kindest heart who just wanted to be great. It was a really important moment for me in terms of taking a look at my life and being able to say to myself, “OK, what do I want to do with my life? How do I want to live my life?” And I think the greatest way you can honor your friends who pass away is by living your life to the fullest.
Lowe also congratulated Styles on his very impressive sub-three hour Berlin Marathon last fall. Styles also recently appeared on the latest cover of Runner’s World magazine, wherein author/fellow marathoner Haruki Murakami interviewed Styles about falling in love with running, who’s on his running playlist (Floating Points and Jamie xx), and how the sport plays into his creative process. “No one can run a marathon for you,” Styles said. “Whereas there are a lot of people who help me make music, put the music out, put on a show and make me look good at it! But running is a conversation with myself.”
