King Charles and Queen Camilla hosted the annual Commonwealth Day Reception at St James’s Palace this evening, joined by the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.
The gathering brings together foreign ministers and UK parliamentarians to mark this year’s celebration.
The 2026 theme, “Unlocking opportunities together for a prosperous Commonwealth,” reflects Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey’s focus on creating meaningful opportunities across member nations.
This year’s theme complements the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, which carries the banner “Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth.”

Earlier today at Westminster Abbey, the King delivered a speech acknowledging the difficulties facing the global community.
“Across our world, communities and nations face the increasing pressures of conflict, climate change and rapid transformation,” he said. “Yet it is often in such testing moments that the enduring spirit of the Commonwealth is most clearly revealed.”
The monarch described the Commonwealth as a “remarkable association” spanning every continent and ocean, bringing together diverse cultures, languages and faiths under common principles of democracy, justice and mutual respect.
He characterised the voluntary union as “rare and precious” in an increasingly divided world, serving nearly three billion people across member states.
The King emphasised the Commonwealth’s untapped commercial potential, describing it as ripe for “prosperous trade between trusting partners.”
With approximately two-thirds of the Commonwealth’s population aged under thirty, he portrayed the association as fundamentally shaped by its young people and their possibilities.

“It is our shared responsibility to ensure that they inherit not only hope and ambition, but also a world in which they can flourish,” he stated.
Environmental protection featured prominently in his remarks, with the monarch noting that climate change represents not a distant concern but “a lived reality” for many Commonwealth nations. He stressed the duty to safeguard oceans, forests and the natural world for future generations.
The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting will convene in Antigua and Barbuda from 1st to 4th November this year.
In his Westminster Abbey address, the King reflected on the significance of such gatherings, noting that “the great gatherings of our nations are strengthened by the daily endeavours of their people.”

At this evening’s St James’s Palace reception, guests will enjoy a performance by a Maltese choir. The Royal Family will meet with attending foreign ministers and members of Parliament.
