Merced County entertainment in August: Cover bands, a Broadway musical and more

Come celebrate all things Irish; with traditional music, singing, dancing, poetry, story-telling and lots of carrying on! Fabulous food and drink make the evening fun and festive!

The Session Players is a group of Celtic Music enthusiasts who meet and play rousing Celtic music every Thursday evening in the National Hotel Bar.

The Low Coals are a raggle-taggle group of musicians that have been playing together in the back rooms, kitchens, and dance floors of Nevada County for over a decade. Rooted in Scottish, Irish, Scandinavian, and Galician traditional music, The Low Coals bring an invigorating energy and joie-de-vivre to the many songs and tune traditions they flow between. Nevada County locals, Emilie Rose and Ben Grove tear up the bow hairs on the fiddle and mandolin, with Cameron Fraser and Delphine Griffith holding it down on the guitar and harp. With a wide range of traditional and original tunes and songs, you’ll be hard pressed not to get up out of your seat and dance when The Low Coals start playing.

“Maggie’s Kin” is led by accordionist, guitarist, singer, and composer Maggie McKaig. Maggie is no stranger to Nevada County St Paddy’s Day Ceilidhs—she’s spent the better portion of the 21st century producing, co-producing (with Shannon Dooley-Miller), and performing at such gatherings along with her various bands including the Celtic Wonder Band, the Celtic Wonder Players, the Craic Cabaret Players, and Maggie’s Mob.

Joining Maggie onstage will be her longtime musical partners Luke Wilson on tenor guitar and vocals; Murray Campbell on violin and oboe; Randy McKean on clarinet and bass clarinet; and Sands Hall on harmony vocals.

THE EXILES OF ERIN are: Shawn Prescott and Guy and Shawn Prudhomme. All three are seasoned Celtic musicians and singers, performing in various events, festivals, and local venues for decades. Shawn Prescott and Guy are co-hosts of the former Holbrooke Hotel, now Wild Eye Pub session on sporadic Mondays, and regular core players at the weekly Thursday National Hotel Celtic Session. They are sharing a St. Patrick’s Day event with Three Times Through on Sunday the 15 at the Wild Eye Pub in Grass Valley from 6:00 to 8:30.

The Shanty Mountain Bards are Rod Baggett, Robbie Merchant, Heather Grove and Tim Yamuichi. They have been performing and leading vocal gatherings together for many years and have been featured at the KVMR Celtic Festival and the WorldFest with their previous bands Sierra Capella and Harmony Happens. They regularly lead “The Foundry Sings” at the Miner’s Foundry in Nevada City and perform in various individual music projects including the Music in the Mountains choir and the KVMR Women Making Music series.    They hope that you will sing along with them!

The Boho Orchestra is a group of nine women who love to play music interweaving Celtic and Bluegrass genres.

Highlights have included stage presence at the KVMR Celtic festival and the Strawberry Music Festival. Their lively tunes deliver foot stomping melodies as well as lilting waltzes.

Rossignol is a longtime, close-knit group of women who love and honor medieval music and traditions, incorporating many Celtic tunes into their repertoire. They feature harp, fiddle, flute and penny whistle to back up their beautiful harmonies.
