Lake Winnebago gets its own song on indie artist Bill Callahan’s new album, “My Days of 58.”
Callahan, described as “one of America’s great singer-songwriters” by Pitchfork, reflects on his own life and death in “Lake Winnebago,” one of 12 tracks on the album released Feb. 27 on Drag City Records.
Among the lyrics: “Death is a hazy horizon in Wisconsin/I can lay my dreams to sleep on/Lake Winnebago/And not wonder where do they go/Lake Wheredotheygo.”
It’s unclear how Callahan, who previously recorded under the band name Smog, came to know and seemingly fall in love with Wisconsin’s largest inland lake, which sprawls across 138,000 acres in Winnebago, Calumet and Fond du Lac counties. He grew up in Maryland and England, previously lived in Chicago and now calls Austin, Texas, home.
In the lyrics, he also mentions Fond du Lac and the shores of Butte des Morts and references the “last time I was there was to bury Mom and Dad.”
