SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A movie filmed in San Diego County is getting major attention ahead of a big night in Hollywood’s entertainment industry.
The film “One Battle After Another,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio, is nominated for “Best Picture” at the 98th Academy Awards, which takes place Sunday. The Oscar-nominated film has a strong local connection, with several scenes filmed at locations within the region.
Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, the action-thriller follows a former revolutionary forced back into a dangerous conflict while being pursued by a corrupt military officer. The ensemble cast also includes includes Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, Regina Hall, and Teyana Taylor.

Officials say the production injected nearly $7 million into the local economy, with spending on hotels, food, wages for extras and crews members, along with other production costs.
The movie’s success — and its award buzz — could help attract more Hollywood productions to the region, officials said. This could generate future jobs and increased economic activity.
Ten films from 2025 are vying for the the “Best Picture” award, though major indications suggest it will likely come down to “One Battle After Another” or Ryan Coogler’s historical horror drama “Sinners.”
As the Oscars air Sunday, San Diegans will have an extra reason to tune in — to see whether a movie filmed in their own backyard takes home Hollywood’s biggest prize.
