King Charles has reportedly made a major decision to distance himself from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, as the couple prepare for what critics have dubbed a “quasi-royal tour.” The Duke and Duchess of Sussex recently announced plans to travel to Australia for a series of public events, their first visit to the country since their official royal tour in 2018.
But royal insiders claim the King has effectively “washed his hands” of the couple’s activities, choosing not to intervene or comment on their trip despite concerns it could resemble an unofficial royal engagement. When asked for her views on the tour, royal expert Ingrid Seward told TalkTV: “I think they are lucky they were in the Middle East a few weeks ago and they are not there now. They are obviously trying to promote themselves, and they need to keep a high profile in order to make money.”
She added: “I think the King has probably slightly washed his hands of them
“He’s [Charles] got plenty of other things to worry about. They do what they like up to a point. I think he has got more important things to worry about than what Harry and Meghan are doing at this moment.”
The couple are expected to travel to Australia for a series of public appearances, a trip some critics have already described as resembling an unofficial royal tour despite Harry and Meghan stepping back from royal duties.
During the visit, Prince Harry is due to deliver a keynote speech at a major workplace mental health summit, where he will discuss psychological safety and workplace wellbeing.
Meanwhile Meghan Markle is set to headline a high-profile women’s leadership event in Sydney, where she will appear as a guest speaker alongside other prominent figures.
The Sussexes are also expected to take part in a number of additional engagements linked to charities and organisations they support while in the country.
However, the planned appearances have prompted criticism from some royal commentators, who argue the trip risks blurring the line between the couple’s private ventures and the type of overseas tours typically carried out by working members of the Royal Family.
