Actor and comedian Kumail Nanjiani shocked the Academy Awards crowd when he revealed that there were two wins in the same category, a rare occurrence that has only happened just six times before Sunday’s show. (See a clip of the stunning moment below.)
Nanjiani, while presenting the award for Best Live-Action Short, advised the crowd that he wasn’t “joking” about the shared winners moments after he opened the envelope in front of him.
“It’s actually a tie. So, everyone, calm down. We’re going to get through this. Focus up. Calm down. Remain calm,” he urged the crowd.
“The Singers” — a musical comedy from director Sam A. Davis and producer Jack Piatt — along with “Two People Exchanging Saliva” — a French-language drama from Natalie Musteata and Alexandre Singh — took home statuettes for in the short film category.
The last time there was a joint win at the Academy Awards was at the 2013 ceremony, when “Skyfall” and “Zero Dark Thirty” both received the Oscar for sound editing.
Those behind both of the winning films made separate acceptance speeches, something Nanjiani couldn’t help but joke about between their remarks.
“Ironic that the short film Oscar is going to take twice as long,” he quipped.
Host Conan O’Brien later cracked that the tie “ruined 22 million Oscar pools.”
