Luke Grimes on Kayce’s emotional journey in ‘Marshals’
Luke Grimes explains Kayce’s emotional path in “Marshals” and why the character will never sing on the “Yellowstone” spinoff.
“Marshals,” one of the newest series in Taylor Sheridan’s expanding “Yellowstone” universe, aired its third episode on March 15 and found Kayce Dutton once again caught between two worlds.
The series follows Kayce (Luke Grimes), son of the late patriarch John Dutton (Kevin Costner), as he and his family navigate life after leaving the Yellowstone Ranch.
Episode 3, titled “Road to Nowhere,” sends the Marshals to a tense roadblock where reservation activists from Broken Rock confront local ranchers and a mining crew preparing to break ground on a new operation near the reservation.
Here’s what to know about the third episode of “Marshals.”
‘Marshals’ episode No. 3: ‘Road to Nowhere’ recap
The third episode of “Marshals” opens with two shadowy figures placing an explosive device in the middle of a road. They detonate it and speed off into the night.
Viewers later learn the blast occurred along a highway where a digging crew was headed to break ground on a new mine near the Broken Top reservation.
When the mining crew and local cattle ranchers are forced to reroute onto a road that crosses reservation land, they are confronted by Rainwater (Gil Birmingham), Mo (Mo Brings Plenty), and other reservation activists, who threaten to seize their vehicles for trespassing.
Kayce and the rest of the Marshals are called to the scene, where tensions quickly escalate into violence. Two people are shot, and although the team apprehends a suspect, the Marshals end up taking criticism from both sides.
Kayce later meets with Rainwater to discuss the roadblock and search for a peaceful solution, but both men become targets in a drive-by shooting.
The Marshals receive a tip that the shooters are members of the Clegg family, a once-prominent clan with roots nearly as deep as the Duttons’.
Following the lead into the woods, the Marshals are drawn into a firefight in which Kayce narrowly avoids an explosive. They ultimately take down one shooter and apprehend the other.
After the chaos settles, Rainwater visits Kayce, who admits he feels pushed away by both sides of his world.
The episode closes on a foreboding note as Kayce discovers a lone bullet left outside his door in the middle of the night.
