The world of Peaky Blinders is expanding with a feature film aimed at wrapping up the hit series after six seasons.
The film, titled “Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man,” brings back Cillian Murphy as crime boss Thomas Shelby, along with series creator Steven Knight and director Tom Harper.
Murphy said returning to the role after more than a decade has been rewarding.
“Absolute joy, really, just to have that level of writing, to work with this level of actor, to work with this level of director. An absolute gift,” Murphy told NY1. “It’s hard to kind of fathom that it was that long and there was that 36 hours of TV, and now a movie means I’m extremely old, I suppose.”
The film also introduces new cast members, including Rebecca Ferguson, Barry Keoghan and Tim Roth.
Roth said joining the established franchise was appealing.
“It was good. The reputation of the show is fantastic. They had a reputation of a thing where actors would love to have a bash at that because it’s a good time. And so we all stepped in,” he said.
Ferguson plays a mysterious woman connected to Shelby’s past and explained the concept of the plot.
“We’re living through the sort of illusion of Tommy when we meet him 10, 12 years after he’s been living with his demons, and the silence is there, and what comes when you’re still with all of the horror. Enter Kaolo with an agenda and with motive,” she said.
Keoghan, who plays Shelby’s son, said the on-screen relationship draws from personal experience.
“All of our relationships on screen, I think it was Tom that let that breathe and was open for it to see where we take it. I think it was more just bringing truth forward and bringing my own relationship with my own absent father and letting that dynamic play in,” he said.
“Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man” is now in theaters and will be available on Netflix on Friday.
The franchise is also set to continue with a sequel series, expected to take place in the 1950s and follow a new generation of the Shelby family.
