Timothée Chalamet criticized for calling ballet a ‘dying art form’

The title of BalletMet’s next production offers a simple explanation for why they do what they do: “For the Love of Dance!”
A celebration of artistic range and creative voices, the triple bill will showcase the work of three choreographers in a trio of mixed-rep ballets, which feature unrelated short ballets with intermission, much like a collection of short stories.
Alexei Ratmansky created “Seven Sonatas” while in residence with the American Ballet Theatre and premiered the work in 2009.
The ballet is set to Domenico Scarlatti’s piano sonatas, which will be played by local pianist Mariko Kaneda, and features six dancers (three couples), performing on a nightly rotation.
“Divide and Conquer” is a world premiere by BalletMet dancer Leiland Charles, who collaborated with a fashion-design class from Columbus College of Art & Design to create costume concepts. Charles also has choreographed for BalletMet in the past.
Choreographed by Juanjo Arqués, “Ignite” draws inspiration from British painter William Turner’s “The Burning of the Houses of Lords and Commons.”
The dancers will be clad in red, yellow and orange silk to represent the flames that engulfed the government buildings.
Details: “For the Love of Dance!” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. March 20-21 and March 26-28, and at 2 p.m. March 21-22 in the Davidson Theatre at the Riffe Center, 77 S. High St.
