(NewsNation) — The best laid plans can go awry — especially when the person at the center of the plans refuses to go along with them.

Britney Spears’ manager, family and friends had hoped she would enter a treatment program after her arrest for DUI earlier this month… and that was the plan.

Britney Spears resistant to treatment program after DUI arrest: Friend

The statement released by her manager, Cade Hudson, even said as much.

The statement called what happened “an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable. Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in a long-overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life… Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time. Her boys are going to be spending time with her. Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well-being.”

The plan, insiders told me, was for Spears to at the very least, enter a 30 day alcohol “awareness” program — if only to show the judge overseeing the case that she was taking this issue and her DUI seriously.

”She could lose her license and actually go to jail,” the friend told me.

But Spears initially refused to do any treatment plans whatsoever, I’m told.

‘Childlike’ Britney Spears ‘won’t give up her freedom’: Friend

”She has very big trust issues, obviously,” the friend said. “She is refusing to go into a treatment center and is telling everybody she can deal with (sobriety) on her own. She will not sign anything anymore because of the last conservatorship; she won’t give up her freedom for anything. She has been told to stop doing the Instagram (dance videos) and to grow up. She is very childlike. The good news is, after this arrest, she sees she could lose everything, so she is committed. We just don’t know if she can do it on her own.”

While it took a bit of convincing, Spears has now come around.

After some initial resistance, another close friend said, “She now recognizes (treatment) is an opportunity for her to get her life back. And she is now open to getting ahead of the issue, start rebuilding her life and re-examine the choices she has been making over the past few years. Trust is something very hard to come by for her but she has come to the conclusion she does need to re-examine her lifestyle (with help).”

Life for Britney Spears after conservatorship

Spears has had a rough few years since being let out of her 13-year conservatorship.

She seemed to spiral after her marriage to Sam Asghari ended — and police have been called several times.

Emergency services were called to the hotel in West Hollywood in the early hours of Thursday, May 2, 2024, following reports of an injured woman, which Billboard reported occurred amid a “major fight” involving her boyfriend. Spears later clarified on Instagram that she had twisted her ankle and felt “harassed” by the medical response, calling the incident “fake news,” but according to media reports, tens of thousands of dollars of damage had been done to the room.

Last May, police were called after the pop star reportedly started drinking heavily and lit a cigarette mid-flight on a private jet flying home from Cabo San Lucas. At the time, she was given a warning and released.

”We are all worried about her,” the friend said. “And she needs to prove first to the judge — and then herself and the rest of us — that she is taking the DUI seriously and wants to turn her life around.”

Spears’ court date for the DUI is May 4.

A rep for Spears declined comment.
