New cryptic activity in the world of The Strokes ahead of their Coachella set has hinted that new music might be on the horizon for the indie stalwarts.
On their social media channels, the band shared a series of retro, 8-bit style visuals, including a blue, pixelated animation of a horse pulling a cassette tape and a notepad.
Hopping on a new marketing trend that has found much success, the band has also launched a new SMS sign-up page, which invites fans to opt in to messaging straight from the source.
Off the back of this, some fans received a message asking for their e-mail addresses to “share something soon.” They added cryptically, “We’ll be in touch,” sending social media into a frenzy.
Additionally, as per Happy Mag, the phone number linked to the band ends in 1251, which is most likely a callback to their 2003 track, ’12:51′, which opens with the apt lyric, “Talk to me now I’m older.”
The Strokes are scheduled to perform at Coachella on April 11th and April 18th, at around 20:40 local time for a 75-minute set.
They also have warm-up dates lined up in San Francisco on April 4th and April 6th, which could be used to preview new material before Coachella.
Following this, the New York icons will perform at festivals such as Outside Lands and Just Like Heaven, as well as Japan’s Summer Sonic.
The Strokes’ last full-length album, The New Abnormal, was produced by Rick Rubin and released in 2020.
In 2022, Rubin confirmed that he was working on a new album with the indie legends, referring to an “incredible” recording experience they shared in Costa Rica.
In response to the mounting questions regarding new music, the frontman said that, though they had “jammed and started some stuff,” a complete record was “extremely very far off”.
Instead, he encouraged fans to “Check back in a year or [two] honestly.”
