TL;DR

  • Spotify has launched a new feature called SongDNA
  • Currently rolling out in beta to Premium users on iOS and Android
  • Lets users explore songwriters, producers, samples, and musical connections
  • Built partly on data from WhoSampled
  • Aims to improve music discovery and give more credit to behind-the-scenes creators

Spotify’s New SongDNA Feature Is a Game-Changer for Music Discovery

Spotify is pulling back the curtain on how music is made—and in the process, it might be redefining how we discover it.

The platform’s new feature, SongDNA, is rolling out now in beta, offering listeners a deeper, more interactive look at the songs they love. And if early reactions are anything to go by, this could be one of the most important updates Spotify has introduced in years.

What Is Spotify’s SongDNA Feature?

SongDNA is essentially a musical “family tree” built directly into the Spotify app.

Instead of just showing the artist and album, the feature lets users explore the entire creative network behind a track—including songwriters, producers, engineers, samples, interpolations, and even cover versions.

Accessible through the “Now Playing” screen, users can tap into the SongDNA card and start navigating connections between songs, artists, and collaborators in real time.

Think of it less like reading credits—and more like falling down a rabbit hole.

How Does SongDNA Actually Work?

Using SongDNA is simple, but the experience itself goes deep.

While playing a song, users can scroll down and open the SongDNA section, where they’ll find a detailed breakdown of everyone involved in the track. From there, you can tap on any name or element—like a producer or a sampled track—and jump into other songs and artists connected to them.

The result is an interactive web of music history, where one song can lead you across genres, decades, and entire creative communities.

Why Is SongDNA a Big Deal?

Because it highlights the people who usually get overlooked.

Streaming has long prioritized the main artist, often leaving producers, engineers, and songwriters in the background. SongDNA flips that by putting those contributors front and center—giving them visibility and recognition they’ve historically lacked.

It also transforms how discovery works. Instead of relying solely on algorithms or playlists, listeners can now explore music through human connections—who worked with who, who inspired what, and where sounds originated.

Where Does the Data Come From?

SongDNA is powered by a mix of artist-submitted information and community-driven data, including contributions tied to platforms like WhoSampled.

That means it doesn’t just show official credits—it can also highlight samples, references, and influences that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Artists and labels can also manage how their information appears through Spotify for Artists, giving them some control over their musical “story.”

Who Can Use SongDNA Right Now?

At the moment, SongDNA is rolling out in beta to Spotify Premium users globally, specifically on iOS and Android devices.

A full rollout is expected to continue through April 2026, meaning more users should gain access soon.
