SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — April has arrived and with it are a whole lot of free and entertaining events to do in San Diego.

From jazz shows to artisan markets and open mic nights, there’s something for everyone every week of the month.

Shows at Lou Lou’s Jungle Room

Throughout April, Lou Lou’s Jungle Room, which is located inside The Lafayette Hotel in North Park, has free live music performances.

Some of the shows do require a reservation, which you can make online. Seating is also first-come, first-served, so it’s a good idea to get there right when doors open. Some of the shows are also 21 and over, and IDs are checked at the door.

Lou Lou’s is a supper, jazz club with a gold clam shell stage and vibrant, over-the-top interior design that’s a staple of Consortium Holdings, the restaurant group that purchased and remodeled The Lafayette.

Some of the performers you can see there include a San Diego-based pianist, a Latin jazz performer and a local funk group.

There is a dinner option offered on select Thursdays, but it isn’t free.

Mad House Open Mic nights

Mad House Comedy Club hosts several open mic nights throughout the month that are free to the public. There will be events on April 6-7, 13-14 and 20-21.

Shows start at either 8 p.m. or 9:30 p.m. and are 21+.

The comedy club invites guests to “come watch stars be born and dreams die 5 min at a time.”

Sunday organ concerts at Balboa Park

Every Sunday of the month, you can watch a free, one-hour musical performance at the Spreckles Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park.

Not just a pretty backdrop for photos, the pavilion hosts live musical performances, rain or shine, from 2 to 3 p.m.

According to the event’s website, the performances always include a major piece by Bach.

Hot Glass, Cold Beer, April 3-4

You can watch live glass-blowing demonstrations while enjoying craft beer in Escondido. The event “Hot Glass, Cold Beer” takes place from noon to 5 p.m. at California Center for the Arts.

The demonstrations are led by James Stone, a glass artist from Stone & Glass. Stone, as well as other glass-blowing artists, will be donating hand-blown cups with a complimentary drink for a donation of $25.

All proceeds benefit the California Center for the Arts.

SDSU 54th annual Pow Wow, April 11

Several student groups in partnership with the Native Resource Center and the San Diego State University (SDSU) American Indian Studies Department are holding the 54th Pow Wow on campus.

The annual event brings together the Native American community and celebrates Native culture and heritage. According to the event’s social media page, it is one of the longest-running Pow Wows run by a university in California.

The event starts at 11 a.m. at the SDSU ENS 700 Field.

Fallbrook Avocado Festival, April 19

From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., you can explore the 39th annual Fallbrook Avocado Festival.

Some of the events at the festival include a guacamole contest, a little miss and mister avocado contest, an avocado 500 race and a best dressed avocado competition.

There’s also a beer and wine garden for those who are 21 or older, where you can purchase drinks.

Wow Festival, April 23-26

La Jolla Playhouse has partnered with UC San Diego for a four-day festival celebrating immersive art. There will be more than 20 works to explore around the university’s campus, some of which are free.

You can filter events on the festival’s website to see which ones require a paid ticket.

Some of the free exhibits include an interactive live theater experience, a Chinese pole performance and a show on parenthood.

Adams Avenue Unplugged, April 25

More than 90 musical acts will perform across 26 stages on Saturday, April 25, for Adams Avenue Unplugged. The free walkabout event spans Adams Avenue, cutting through University Heights, Normal Heights and Kensington.

The artists will play at various restaurants, bars, coffee houses and outdoor patios along the street. There will also be a community beer garden where food and drinks can be purchased.

The main event, which is a performance from artist Alejandro Escovedo at the historic Normal Heights United Church, is a ticketed event. All other performances are free.

The event runs from noon to midnight.

Ocean Beach Makers Market, April 25

From handmade jewelry to artwork and ceramics, Ocean Beach Makers Market is a free, family-friendly event where you can shop for handmade, one-of-a-kind items from local vendors.
