Watch The Strokes debut their new song, ‘Going Shopping’

Now, they’ve given fans a first look at the new sonic world, marking their first new music since 2020’s The New Abnormal.

After opening their set at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco with ‘Bad Decisions’ and ‘Hard to Explain’, the group had two more hits, ‘Selfless’ and ‘Someday’, to soar through before their live debut of the new material.

Julian Casablancas can be heard in the footage of their debut asking, “Why not?” before the band picked up with skippy, sunny guitars leading into a verse that began, “Like a tiger, they will chase you down.”

On the chorus, Casablancas’s auto-tuned voice sings, “I’m going away to the country, don’t wander off far, I’m going out of my mind, throwing all my plans out the window.”

The New York legends have been teasing new music with a new marketing strategy, which encouraged fans to sign up for texts right from the source.

Since then, 100 fans who provided their addresses received cassettes which featured the new song, bringing back the analogue, physical experience of the indie scene.

The band is soon set to return to Coachella for the first time in 15 years this weekend. Following this, the icons will perform at festivals such as Outside Lands and Just Like Heaven, as well as Japan’s Summer Sonic.

The group has returned after a hiatus for the past few years, which saw Casablancas working with his side project, The Voidz, on a new album, while guitarist Albert Hammond Jr, focusing on his solo career, put out the album Melodies on Hiatus in 2023.
