The Seattle International Film Festival will forgo a longtime tradition this year.
The 52nd annual festival, which begins May 7, will not have a closing-night party — the first time that Artistic Director Beth Barrett can remember SIFF going without such an event. This comes in a year during which SIFF has struggled financially and faced the loss of a longtime venue, the SIFF Cinema Egyptian.
“Budgetary concerns really didn’t allow us to invest in a closing night party this year,” Barrett said in a telephone interview.
The customary opening-night party, however, will take place May 7, following a screening of “I Love Boosters,” with director Boots Riley in attendance at the Paramount Theatre.
And the closing-night film — the dark comedy “The Invite” — will be screened May 17 at SIFF Cinema Downtown, with director/star Olivia Wilde in attendance.
Other SIFF traditions remain, including the audience-voted Golden Space Needle awards. Other festival venues this year include the SIFF Uptown, SIFF Film Center and the PACCAR Imax Theater at Pacific Science Center.
SIFF passes and six-ticket packages are currently on sale; individual tickets go on sale April 15 to SIFF members and April 16 to the general public.
