Ruby Rose publicly accused singer Katy Perry of sexual assault yesterday in a series of posts on the social media platform Threads, saying the alleged incident occurred at Spice Market nightclub in Melbourne when Rose was in her early 20s.
The accusation came in response to a post about Perry’s reaction to Justin Bieber’s Coachella set.
“Katy Perry sexually assaulted me at Spice Market nightclub in Melbourne. Who gives a shit what she thinks,” Rose wrote.
In subsequent posts, Rose described the alleged incident in graphic detail.
“She didn’t kiss me. She saw me ‘resting’ on my best friends lap to avoid her and bent down, pulled her underwear to the side and rubbed her disgusting vagina on my face until my eyes snapped open and I projectile vomitted on her,” Rose wrote.
Rose, now 40, said she previously recounted the story publicly but softened its framing. “After it I threw up on her. I told the story publicly but changed it to be a ‘funny little drunk story’ because I didn’t know how else to handle it. Later she agreed to help me get my US visa. So I kept it a secret. But I DID tell yall she wasn’t a good person. Instead I got attacked by.. everyone,” she wrote.
Rose said the passage of time made the disclosure no less difficult. “I was only in my early 20s. I’m now 40. It has taken almost 2 decades to say this publicly. Though I am so grateful to have made it long enough to find my voice, it just shows how much of an impact trauma and sexual assault takes. Thank you for seeing me,” she wrote.
Rose also addressed the particular challenges of speaking out about abuse by women. “As a woman, for a myriad of reasons, opening up about W on W violence and sexual abuse, seems to be 100 times harder than speaking about the male predators, at least for me,” she wrote.
Rose said she does not intend to file a police report related to the Perry allegation, citing the burden such proceedings place on survivors. “Everyone? lol, no just 2 from the industry I think, and about 10 outside of it. Let’s say each case took only 6 months to resolve and I did them back to back. You’re asking too much of Victims to spend 6 years in court reliving their abuse,” she wrote.
In a follow-up post, Rose elaborated on her decision not to pursue legal action. “Yeah, not interested in filing a report over this, not when I haven’t even filed a report for the numerous rapes at the hands of grown men. But she is more than welcome to sue me (she won’t, because it happened, I have photos and it was literally in public and witnessed by multiple people). Plus there is so much more that happened in the years leading up to her silly song she won’t want me discussing. The psychological manipulation was strong with that one,” she wrote.
Rose described the emotional weight of coming forward. “Before I open up about something incredibly raw and traumatic, I tell myself ‘it’s ok, you don’t need people to believe you, you just need to get it out of your poor body, before it gives you cancer.’ But then I see this post and … tears consume me, in a good way. Thank you,” she wrote.
In a final post, Rose wrote only: “Just left the police station.”
Perry has not publicly responded to the accusations.
