The couple’s first engagement was at the Royal Children’s Hospital, one of the world’s leading centres for paediatric healthcare, which has welcomed generations of royal visitors.
The visit marked a “poignant” moment for the Duke as the hospital was opened by his grandmother, Elizabeth II, in 1963 and again in 2011 when it moved to a new site. His parents, the King and Diana, Princess of Wales, also visited in 1985.
They were greeted by a crowd of several hundred patients and families, and spent almost 40 minutes shaking hands, taking pictures and chatting to the children.
The Duchess was handed a pink knitted flower by Lily, a four-year-old cancer patient, which she said she loved.
