On Monday afternoon, Haakon was visiting several fishing companies in Møre og Romsdal when his wife once again became the topic of conversation. The future king did his best to put an end to the topic, saying: “I don’t read all my wife’s emails.”
“We’ve been through a lot, but I think things are better now,” he added. “She is ill, and that is already something that is a part of our daily life.” Haakon’s comments come after Mette-Marit recently attended an official engagement with an oxygen tank and breathing tube as she continues her battle with pulmonary fibrosis.
As well as her health, questions are still being asked about Mette Marit’s connection to convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, as well as the 40 charges her son, Marius Borg Høiby, was recently tried for, including rape.
Despite the interview they gave to Norwegian broadcaster NRK in March, Haakon could not prevent his latest appearance from turning to the Epstein files.
“We’re back to the same thing. I don’t intend to delve into that subject here and now, I don’t read all my wife’s emails, and I truly hope no one else does,” he replied.
“I’m not going to dwell on that subject much now, so we’ll continue talking about the main topic,” Haakon said, trying to steer the conversation back to the day’s subject. “We’ve already spoken about it,” he added.
Høiby, who is Mette-Marit’s son from a previous relationship, has pleaded not guilty to the four charges of rape. However, he pleaded guilty to several driving offences, to an aggravated drugs offence and breaking a restraining order, and “partly” to threats and aggravated assault.
The prosecutor in the trial told an Oslo court that he should be sentenced to seven years and seven months in prison.
The seven-week trial was one of the biggest cases the country has ever experienced as it detailed the stepson of the future King’s drug addiction, self-made videos of sexual encounters and more than 800 electronic messages entered into evidence.
He is still awaiting a verdict while in police custody.
