One of the most interesting decisions the Kansas City Chiefs have made in the 2026 offseason so far is shuffling the receiver depth chart. The franchise opted to let Hollywood Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster walk away in free agency, leaving the team with a more exciting starting trio. However, while Xavier Worthy, Tyquan Thornton, and Rashee Rice are the current projected starters, they aren’t the only pieces that are set to benefit from the chances.
Second-year receiver Jalen Royals is coming off an underwhelming debut season with only four receiving yards on a pair of catches. It is more than fair to point out that the receiver was a non-factor in the KC offense and didn’t live up to expectations. However, the stage has been set for this to change and Royals to become an incredibly important part of the Chiefs’ rotation.
If the season started today Royals would be the team’s fourth receiver and in an incredibly important role, a season after struggling to make it onto the field consistently. It is exciting to consider what the pass catcher could accomplish in this new role, with the talent being obvious, even coming off of what was a frustrating 2025 season.
Chiefs Receiver Jalen Royals Poised for Breakout 2026 Season
A season ago, it was Thornton in the fourth receiver role for the Chiefs, and the receiver would finish with 438 receiving yards and a trio of touchdown catches. Royals going from four receiving yards to this level of production would obviously be an incredible jump. One that KC has set the receiver up for with their offseason management, which could elevate Royals into a more promising role.
It should be noted that the only thing that could change this is the upcoming draft class. While the Chiefs have a myriad of defensive needs, it wouldn’t be shocking to see the franchise opt to bring in reinforcements to the receiver position. This is the final hurdle that Royals needs to clear to see himself set up for what would be a breakout season.
The receiver was garnering comparisons in early 2025 to Rashee Rice and was expected to take on a bigger role. There is no denying the frustration and disappointment with what played out in the 2025 season, leaving the pass catcher as an afterthought in the KC offense.
Now, this is destined to change, and Royals is going to have the opportunity to put up numbers and become the contributor he was expected to be a season ago. Fans shouldn’t give up on the receiver just yet, recognizing the clear opportunity that lies ahead and how perfectly set up Royals is for a breakout season.
