The new movie “The Drama,” starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, has stirred audiences with its big twist, and a Jefferson Parish high school is at the center of it.
The A24 film is primarily set in and was filmed around the Boston area. But the crew also shot in the New Orleans area last year, largely at Riverdale High School in Jefferson, the movie’s production designer Zosia Mackenzie told Condé Nast Traveler.
“We fell in love with the midcentury architecture of the building and were fortunate that the students and staff were welcoming and supportive of our work,” Mackenzie said.
(Light spoilers ahead for the movie, which has revealed little about its plot in the marketing.)
Several key scenes take place at Riverdale’s campus, which doubles as the Catholic high school that Zendaya’s character, Emma, attends as a teen. The school and Emma’s time at the campus play a pivotal role.
New Orleans is further featured as the setting for Emma’s childhood home. Even Lil’ Wayne gets a brief shoutout in the form of a poster on the wall of Emma’s teenage bedroom.
“The Drama” portrays Zendaya and Pattinson as a young couple planning their wedding when a surprise revelation threatens to derail the nuptials.
The movie, which premiered on April 3, was directed by Norwegian screenwriter Kristoffer Borgli.
