Jazz at the Lobero presents vocalist and songwriter Lizz Wright, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 14.
“Wright sings with a soaring reflection of the cultural fabric of America,” event organizers said. “With an illustrious 20-year career transcending social divides, Wright continues to captivate audiences worldwide.”
Raised in Georgia, her earliest influences came from gospel traditions and congregational call-and-response, foundations that would later inform her interpretations of the Great American Songbook and beyond.
Wright first gained national recognition at age 22 performing in a touring tribute to Billie Holiday, soon leading to her signing with Verve Records and the release of her 2003 debut album “Salt,” which topped Billboard’s contemporary jazz charts.
Her subsequent releases solidified her reputation as a singular artistic voice. Later projects such as “Freedom & Surrender” (2016), whose single “Lean In” was featured on President Barack Obama’s Summer 2016 playlist, and “Grace: (2017), further showcased her depth and versatility.
In 2022, Wright launched her independent label Blues & Greens Records, debuting with the live album “Holding Space,” and marking a new chapter of artistic and business autonomy.
In 2024, she released her studio album “Shadow,” produced by Chris Bruce, featuring collaborations with Angélique Kidjo and Meshell Ndegeocello.
Blending acoustic textures, global influences, and emotional depth, “Shadow” explores themes of love, loss, community, and healing, offering a testament to Wright’s continued evolution as an artist and her enduring impact on contemporary music.
