Golomb earned Band To Watch status with last year’s exceptional The Beat Goes On, which proved the Columbus trio’s ability to wring powerful rock songs from a few simple chords and harmonies. The new companion EP The Beat Goes On And On And On tweaks a bunch of those songs in fun ways while sliding in one previously unreleased track for good measure.
The first half of the EP steers the material in an acoustic direction. There’s a “silly version” of “The Beat Goes On” that adds some cartoonish sound effects. There’s also a reworking of album highlight “Real Power” described as “The Velvet Underground Live At Valleydale Ballroom, Columbus, Ohio, November 4th, 1966, Type Beat,” a nice little nod to a storied local institution where VU did apparently perform. The short, sweet new one “Morning Noon Or Night” wraps up the acoustic half. Then comes a “bliss mix” of “Staring” with new age icon Laraaji that stretches the song out into infinity, plus remixes of “Be Here Now” by Sonic Boom and Wishy.
Golomb’s Mickey Shuman explains:
The acoustic stuff came from wanting to share what these songs started out like. Almost a demo revisited. The remixes are expansions of our sound we couldn’t access ourselves but also for folks who may have missed out on hearing our record. It can feel hard to find your audience in the vastness of great music today and I think anyone who digs what these legends are up to now and have done in the past might be into what we’ve got going on!
