Bringing together the cast of Clue took careful work on Jonathan Lynn’s part.
The writer-director opened up about figuring out the iconic film’s cast in a 2013 profile for BuzzFeed, which also featured commentary from the cast themselves.
In the profile, Colleen Camp, who played the French maid Yvette, recalled that the competition for the role was fierce.
“Jennifer Jason Leigh, Madonna, Demi Moore — a lot of actresses were really interested in this part. And I really wanted it,” she revealed.

To show her commitment, Camp showed up at her audition in a rented French maid costume, which stood out to Lynn.
“I just found her hilarious,” he shared. When asked if Camp’s figure played a role, Lynn said, “Not really. I mean, the bosom is there. There was no avoiding it.”
Costume designer Michael Kaplan had a vision for the film’s wardrobe, which included the female characters wearing boned undergarments. While that may sound tiresome during a long day of filming, Camp was pleased with the way her character’s costume turned out.
“The genius of Jonathan Lynn was that he was able to use the assets of each person,” said Camp. “I think it was so obvious that I was so well endowed that it became a perfect thing for the characters to react to my breasts.”

Camp’s only complaint was not taking further advantage of the costume, joking, “Why didn’t I take one of those costumes home?!”
Like the rest of the cast, the role is one that comes up often with fans, something she’s enjoyed over the years. “Recently, somebody did a painting of me from Clue the size of a wall,” Camp said at the time. “It’s bizarre and great and hysterical.”
