Liberty Secures Third Consecutive ASUN Win, Unseats Royals 19-9

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Liberty Lacrosse (7-9, 5-2 ASUN) picked up their third consecutive conference victory,  Queens (3-12 ASUN) 19-9 on Saturday on the road. The Lady Flames, led by Ava Rajala with nine points (4g, 5a) secured their victory with a dominant fourth quarter, scoring nine goals in the frame to cement the win.

Rajala contributed a career-best performance tallying a career-high nine points with four goals and a team-high five assists. Katie Colavito found the net six times and assisted on another, with three goals coming from woman-up situations. Olivia Young added to the scoring effort with three goals and one assist.

Ava Menna helped the Lady Flames control possession throughout the contest with a program record 20 draw controls. Menna held the previous record of 18, which she accomplished last season, against Queens.

The Lady Flames improve to 6-1 on the road this season and improve to 4-1 all-time against the Royals.

First Quarter Liberty 4, Queens 1

The Lady Flames started strong with a defensive save by Rachel Hines at 10:33, which set the stage for their offensive surge. Olivia Young opened the scoring with a woman-down goal at 10:16. Ava Rajala followed with a goal from a free position shot at 8:45, widening the lead. Kate Troutman added another goal at 8:06, prompting a timeout from the Royals.

The Lady Flames maintained control with Ava Menna consistently securing draw controls, allowing Katie Colavito to score at 2:13. Despite a late goal from the Royals, the Lady Flames concluded the first quarter ahead 4–1.

 

Second Quarter Liberty 8, Queens 3

The Lady Flames made a strong impact early in the second quarter with Ava Rajala scoring at 14:00, assisted by Olivia Young. This momentum continued as Katie Colavito found the net three times, with two assists from Ava Rajala, including a woman-up goal at 1:50. Despite a goal from the Royals’ Kourtney Goff at 2:05, the Lady Flames maintained control, ending the quarter leading 8–3.

 

Third Quarter Liberty 10, Queens 5

The Lady Flames began the third quarter with momentum as Kendall Nye scored a goal at 13:45, assisted by Fayedra Vang. Ava Menna consistently controlled the draw, helping maintain possession for the Lady Flames. Nicole Arriola added another goal at 7:54, extending the Lady Flames’ lead. Despite goals by the Royals, the Lady Flames held steady. The quarter concluded with both teams netting two goals each, with the Lady Flames leading 10–5

 

Fourth Quarter Liberty 19, Queens 9

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Flames showcased a decisive performance, scoring nine goals to secure the victory. After the Royals’ early goal by Lexy Stevenson, the Lady Flames responded swiftly with Kendall Coss netting the first goal for the visitors at 13:31. Olivia Young continued the momentum with a goal assisted by Coss, and Amelia Loughery added another.

The Lady Flames’ offensive surge included a crucial woman-down goal by Ava Rajala and a woman-up goal by Fayedra Vang from a free position shot. Despite two late goals by Erin Bock for the Royals, the Lady Flames maintained their dominance with Katie Colavito netting the final goal of the quarter. The game ended with the Lady Flames securing a 19–9 victory.

 

Lady Flames News & Notes

·      Liberty outshot Queens 39-21 with a 31-15 edge in shots on goal.

·      Colavito (6g, 1a) now leads the Lady Flames with 35 goals this season. She scores six times in a single game for the sixth time in her career.

·      Rajala’s nine points (4g, 5a) are tied for the fourth most in a single game in program history.

·      Rajala now leads the Lady Flames with 55 points this season on 23 goals and 32 assists. She is currently fourth in program history with 32 assists in a single season. She needs seven to pass the program record held by Morgan Becker in 2018 with 28.

·      Menna dominated the draw circle with a program record 20 draw controls. In her last two games against Queens, she has earned 38 draw controls.

·      The Lady Flames recorded 16 caused turnovers to 9 from Queens. Colavito and Madeleine Kulunder each had a game-high three in the contest.

·      Both sides earned 22 ground balls.

·      Olivia Young (3g, 1a) has now scored in ten consecutive contests.

·      With six saves, Rachel Hines (7-9) improved her season averages to an 11.48 goals-against average and a .434 save percentage.
