Zia Records prepares for National Record Store Day

Lovers of vinyl records looking for some nostalgia and good music are gearing up for National Record Store Day.

Fox – 10 Phoenix

When independent record stores open their doors on Saturday, April 18, for the annual Record Store Day event, a smorgasbord of musical treats will await vinyl shoppers.

More than 3,000 record shops from across the United States and the world will have copies from some of roughly 380 special releases – most on vinyl LPs – available for purchase in limited quantities. (See the complete list of new releases here.)

Many stores have special events, too. To find a store near you, go to the Record Store Day website. For instance, New York City’s Rough Trade Records will host a daylong event with live performances at Rockefeller Center.

New Grateful Dead streaming service has expanding vault of live shows

Violet Grohl, the daughter of Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl, is releasing her first physical piece of music, a 7-inch single, on Record Store Day in advance of her debut album, “Be Sweet To Me,” which is due to be released May 29. She will perform at Fingerprints Records in Long Beach, California, as part of Record Store Day festivities.

Ron Blair, bassist for Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, will be at Lou’s Records in Encinitas, California on April 18 to meet shoppers and sign copies of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers’ “July 16, 1978 – Paradise Theater, Boston, MA,” a live performance being released by The Tom Petty Estate.

These two releases “stand out for me, because they represent two different aspects of the Record Store Day list – brand new music and special musical moments from the past,” said Carrie Colliton, who co-founded Record Store Day along with Michael Kurtz, in an email interview with USA TODAY.

Here are more Record Store Day recommendations.

Caamp – ‘Caamp 10th Anniversary Edition’

Folk band Caamp celebrates the 10th anniversary of their self-titled debut album with this expanded two-disc remastered version of the album, which includes three unreleased demos and four live tracks along with the album’s original tracks.

This isn’t the first time the live performances have been released. The performances were initially released on VHS and Laserdisc as “The Cars – Live 1984-1985” and appeared on “Heartbeat City (Deluxe Edition)” on CD.

Dope – ‘No Country for Old Men’

No, it’s not connected to the Coen Brothers’ best picture. It’s the unexpected collaboration between Chuck D and The Doors’ John Densmore – who got paired up on a Record Store Day panel in 2014 and decided to make some music together. The rock drummer said he got a note from the Public Enemy rapper, saying, “You’ve got the beats, I’ve got the rhymes, let’s make doPE.” The enlightening project’s first track, “Every Tick Tick Tick,” is the Record Store Day Song of the Year.

Peter Gabriel – ‘Sledgehammer’ zoetrope picture disc

Recorded during the band’s 1975 Wish You Were Here Tour, the set list includes “Dark Side of the Moon” in its entirety and songs “Raving and Drooling” and “You’ve Got To Be Crazy,” which would eventually become “Sheep” and “Dogs” on 1977’s “Animals” album.
