Princess Josephine’s confirmation came at a moment of quiet grief for the Danish royal family, with the 15-year-old openly acknowledging how deeply the loss of her maternal grandfather affected the days leading up to the ceremony.

Speaking with visible emotion, she and her twin brother Prince Vincent reflected on the family’s sorrow, talking to Ekstra Bladet. “It’s been incredibly difficult for me and the entire family, and we miss him so much,” they said with visible emotion.

That sense of loss shaped the atmosphere around Fredensborg Castle, where tradition and family life converged during one of the most symbolic milestones in Danish royal upbringing.

Josephine continued, “But he will always be in our hearts. We’re so saddened by what happened, especially since it was right before our confirmation. But we know he’s with us. We miss him dearly, and it brings us peace to know he’s in a better place now.”

That sense of loss shaped the atmosphere around Fredensborg Castle, where tradition and family life converged during one of the most symbolic milestones in Danish royal upbringing. The twins, children of King Frederik and Queen Mary, were confirmed in a ceremony that marked their transition from childhood into adolescence, a rite of passage deeply rooted in Nordic custom and royal continuity.

The emotional weight of the week was heightened by Queen Mary’s first public appearance following the death of her father, Professor John Donaldson, who died at 84 in Tasmania.

Rather than traditional black mourning attire, she chose a deep navy ensemble, a decision aligned with royal protocol where navy is often understood as “half-mourning.” The choice allowed her to honor personal grief while fulfilling public duties during a period that also included her children’s confirmation celebrations.

Queen Mary’s personal words underscored the depth of her loss. “My heart is heavy, and my thoughts are gray. My beloved father has passed away,” a grieving Mary wrote. “But I know that once the pain settles, the memories will brighten my days, and what will remain strongest is the love and gratitude for everything he gave me and taught me.”

She also expressed appreciation for the public response. “My sincerest thanks for the overwhelming number of messages, flowers, and kind thoughts following the death of my father,” she shared. “The incredible amount of empathy we’ve been shown has touched us deeply and means more than words can express.”

This year’s ceremony continued that tradition, presided over by the royal confessor, Bishop Henrik Wigh-Poulsen. Despite the sadness surrounding the family, the event gathered nearly the entire royal household.

Against this backdrop, the confirmation at Fredensborg Palace Church carried a layered meaning. The setting itself is steeped in royal history, having hosted confirmations for generations, including King Frederik and Crown Prince Christian.

King Frederik and Queen Mary attended with their children Crown Prince Christian and Princess Isabella, alongside Queen Margrethe, Prince Joachim, Princess Marie, and their wider family. Princess Josephine’s godmother, Princess Marie, was also present, along with cousins including Nikolai and Felix.

International royal ties were visible as well, with King Felipe VI of Spain attending in his role as Prince Vincent’s godfather. His presence was particularly meaningful, as he had been unable to attend Vincent’s baptism years earlier due to official duties abroad. This time, he made a point of being there and was warmly received by the family, sharing a personal moment of condolence with Queen Mary.

Denmark’s Queen Mary (R) turns around as she arrives with Prince Vincent (C) and Princess Josephine (L) for the confirmation of twins Josephine and Vincent.

The twins themselves took part in the day with a sense of unity and support for each other. Vincent described their bond simply, saying, “It’s incredible to have her here,” Vincent said, adding, “I’m so happy to have Fine by my side and to go through everything together,” speaking of his sister, who is 26 minutes younger than him.

Josephine echoed that sentiment, emphasizing how important that shared presence was during such an emotional milestone. “I couldn’t imagine a celebration without him. It wouldn’t be nearly as special,” she said. “It’s always so nice to have the support of someone you know you can truly count on.”

Following the ceremony, the royal family released official portraits capturing the occasion, including formal images of the twins with their parents and siblings. The day concluded with private celebrations at the Fredensborg Castle orangery, a greenhouse filled with citrus trees, flowers, and historical design details that created a warm setting for the family gathering.

The occasion ultimately reflected a delicate balance between duty and mourning, tradition and personal loss. For Princess Josephine and Prince Vincent, the confirmation became not only a formal rite of passage, but also a moment shaped by absence, memory, and the strength of family unity during a difficult time.
