Laverne Cox is not romanticizing fame.

At the premiere of her new Apple TV+ film “Outcome,” the actor and activist spoke candidly about the emotional weight of living in the public eye, saying the loneliness that comes with it can be intense and that the constant awareness of how people perceive her can feel “debilitating.”

Cox said she deeply related to the film’s themes of fame, isolation, and public scrutiny, especially through Keanu Reeves’ character, because that kind of hyper-awareness is something she has carried in her own life.

Still, Cox made it clear that she has no plans to walk away from the spotlight any time soon.  Instead, she said the trade-off is part of the job.

“When I’m on set, I’m not lonely at all,” she said to People. “All the preparation and all the sacrifices I’ve made are worth it when I’m on set and I’m ready to go and take direction and live truthful in the imaginary circumstances of the character.”

Cox also shared that she’s become more cautious about going out, sometimes opting not to attend events if she does not feel up to it, and admitted that the public scrutiny can shape how freely she moves through the world. Even so, she emphasized that being on set and doing the work she loves gives her a sense of purpose that makes the sacrifice worthwhile.

That honesty is part of what has kept Cox such a singular presence in Hollywood. From breaking barriers with “Orange Is the New Black” to continuing to move through film, activism, and storytelling on her own terms, Cox has made a career out of speaking plainly about what visibility really costs. As she enters another chapter with “Outcome,” her message is that fame may be lonely, but the work still gives her something bigger to hold on to.
