Coronation Street star Beverley Callard has spoken out about her cancer battle, saying her I’m A Celebrity exit was “the start of everything”
Beverley Callard became emotional as she revealed her I’m A Celebrity departure marked the beginning of her cancer battle.
The Coronation Street actress was compelled to withdraw from I’m A Celebrity just days before the finale on medical advice. She left the programme after becoming unwell, with producers informing her she needed to depart for health reasons.
Yet, Beverley has now opened up and described how she became unconscious while appearing on the programme, acknowledging “I didn’t know then that I had cancer” as she looked back on her experience on the series.
Following the broadcast of her departure on the ITV programme, she revealed: “I just watched my exit on I’m A Celeb and it made me cry all over again. Of course, I didn’t know then that I had cancer but I just knew that it was the last couple of days there that I hadn’t felt very well.”
Describing the incident, she continued: “What happened was, I was called into the Bush Telegraph and apparently, I lost consciousness for a little while… I just wasn’t feeling myself. They took me to a medical hut and they were amazing; they really looked after me and then they said you can’t go back,” reports the Mirror.

The actress recalled her response: “And I said ‘don’t send me home, I’m sure I’ll be fine’.”
She continued: “I wanted to succeed and make it through to the end but that was the start of everything. It’s made me really emotional but I will beat this. I will beat it.”
During tonight’s episode, Beverley informed her fellow campmates of her exit. Gathering them together, she tearfully announced: “Hi guys, I’ve just got something to tell you all.
“I didn’t feel very well this morning… and the medics have advised I can’t return to camp. I’ve got to go home. I don’t want to go. I’m absolutely gutted. I wanted to finish.”
She revealed she “had a funny turn and they’ve said I can’t come back in and I’ve got to go out. I don’t want to go. I’m gutted I wanted to finish. I wanted to prove older women could do it.”
Scarlett responded by telling her: “Your health is more important,” while Adam offered his support, saying: “Look how far you have come. I’m so proud of you.” Craig paid tribute to her departure, stating: “She gave a really good account of herself and can leave with her head held high.”
Since going public with her diagnosis back in February, Beverley has been regularly updating her supporters on her wellbeing and progress.
At the end of last week, Beverley, 69, confirmed she had undergone surgery to remove her cancer, saying doctors had found the disease in a single lymph node.
She said she had been left “completely wiped out” after getting her results, explaining: “Well, just an update. You were all right, every comment, everything, all sent with love, I know. You were right. I have completely overdone it and, as you know, I got the results on Thursday, and I’m waiting for more, but I’d been decorating like crazy, doing like eight to 10-hour days just trying to get everything finished for Jon coming back.
“And then Friday, I was really, really tired. Today, I’m completely wiped out. I’ve felt shocking all day.
“I woke up and just felt as if I’d not been to sleep at all. Honestly, I feel the same, I’ve been back to bed a couple of times so you were all right. Everybody says to me ‘Oh, Beverley, you’re so strong, you’re so strong.’ I’m actually not!
“I’m headstrong, which is not a good thing, it’s not a quality, I don’t think. So it’s been one of those days. Jon has just made me rest. I had a bath, which was an effort. I put my pyjamas on, which was an effort and that’s it. So, hopefully I will feel better tomorrow but I feel poorly today.”
